History

The St Moses Children's Care Centre was founded at the start of the 70's by Mama Jane Babirye who had understood the need for a Home for orphaned children who have been abandoned or displaced in Uganda. After 10 years on tour as a dancer and actress through Europe and the USA she settled in Jinja in Uganda her native country. She adopted 2 children, Jane and Moses who were still babies. She then took in several others along with mothers and their under nourished babies. Mama Jane worked closely with churches, hospitals and the police. She died in 1983. The centre has since been financed by the organization Kindernothilfe which recently decided to withdraw its aid. Since 1986 it has been in the very capable hands of a German lady, Gaby Kisitu. She is still helping the project working 2 days a week to help Nambi Lillian a young Ugandan woman, the new director of the centre.

The running of the centre

This structure gives orphans the chance to go to school and learn how to fend for themselves when they have grown up. Over and above education they receive love and attention so essential to the health and well-being of the children. In small groups of 12 to 15 the children live in houses run by a “mama” who assumes the role of mother. Expenses like food, medical care, school, electricity, the salaries and other overheads are covered by OMOANA. The existing infrastructure is in a good state of repair, ideal for the welcoming of the children.

It is, nonetheless, important that the youngsters are not cut off from local life. They undertake the daily chores following Ugandan tradition. The aim of the St Moses Children's Care Centre is not to take over the role of society. During the school holidays the children return to their villages where they stay with relations. The welcome by the St Moses Children's Care Centre is temporary. The children return into their communities as soon as is possible, at the latest having completed their primary schooling. All school fees are then, always, paid by OMOANA and the children are accompanied until they can find their own feet. In partnership with OMOANA the St Moses Children's Care Centre has set up a micro-credit project to enable the members of the community who have taken in children find activities that can generate income. Today, OMOAMA is financing 100 children at the St Moses Children's Care Centre of whom 23 teenagers who are at secondary school and live with their relations.
